Practicing for the PSAT in Google Classroom

Practicing for the PSAT

Attached is a link to SkillSurfer on El Portal for some PSAT test taking tips and practice. I will explain all of these resources on Wednesday, but understand that I will be required to submit pages 9-12 of the scoring guide by 9/23. Since the test is so lengthy and the scoring is always a treat, I am going to give you 100 points. You can just send me scans of the pages (I use AdobeScan on my phone) and upload them into the classroom. If you can't attend class on the 16th, be aware that I will be proctoring the SAT on the 23rd so we will not have class. Then on the 30th, I'll be at a law conference. I'm going to try to see if they will be recording the conference and if they are, then we will have CP. If not, then we won't have CP. I'll know of the 29th on the first day of the conference and will send you an e-mail that night to confirm whether we will be having class the next day, or not.

Updating Next Step Plans in Google Classroom

Updating Next Step Plans

We need to update your Next Step Plans. If you didn't save your plan from last year, I'm attaching the blank template. Please update the plans with the results Career Interest Inventory and Career Profile results. That information should go on the first page under Career Goals. Don't worry about the Career Cluster if you didn't record it. Apparently there is a way for you to access prior year classes and grades via your PowerSchool account. You need to do this using a laptop because it won't work on a phone.

1: Login to your PowerSchool account.
2. On the left side, click on "grades."
3. This will pull up a page with tabs by school year. They can click on a tab to see that school year's classes (see below).

If this doesn't work, please let me know.

Due:

College Fair in Google Classroom

College Fair

From the possible colleges you identified in the Interest Inventory assignment, create a 3 minute presentation about 1 of the colleges. Provide the following information:
1. Where it is located and the size of the college/university.
2. Size of the surrounding community where the college/university is located and what there is to do there--restaurants, movie theaters, shopping malls, etc.
3. What majors the college/university offers and which one you are interested. What types of classes are you especially interested in exploring, within and outside your intended major?
4. What clubs/organizations interest you and what do you plan to join?
5. What are the living options and are the dorms like dungeons or are they decent?
6. What are your dining options?
7. What is the full cost of attendance (tuition, rooming, fees, etc.) and what are the scholarship options?

If it asks you for a join code, it is: c6eb10a1

If you have never used Flipgrid, I've attached a little tutorial. You'll notice LITTLE KIDS know how to use Flipgrid so it isn't difficult. However, if you are technologically challenged, let me know and I'll try to help you.

O*Net Interest Profiler in Google Classroom

O*Net Interest Profiler

As I mentioned when we last met, the first priority this year is to update your Next Step Plan.
1. Start by opening a new Word or Google Doc. Put your name at the top of the page.
2. Take the O*Net Interest Profiler and cut and paste the results (it should look like a little bar graph) onto the Word or Google Doc.
3. Move on to the Job Zone by clicking the "Next" button at the bottom of the window. Select a level of preparation (most of you will be looking in Job Zone Four or Five). A series of careers/jobs will appear in the window. There is also a scroll bar on the right so look at all the jobs. When you find a job that appeals to you, click on the link to the job. It should take you to a job profile with educational requirements, job outlook, etc.
4. Snip this profile and paste it into your open document under the interest profile.
5. Click on the link under Education for find "Training." Identify a state and it should provide you with a list of colleges/universities that provide that degree program. Select three to four colleges that provide this training and type their names under this profile.
6. Repeat this process for two more jobs. Your final product should look like the attached example, but have more than one career profile.

This assignment is worth 50 points:
Interest profile - 20 points
Job Profiles #1, 2, 3 - 5 points each for a total of 15 points
Colleges/Training Programs #1, 2, 3 - 5 points each for a total of 15 points
