ELA 7

Welcome to 7^th grade ELA. This is my 9^th year at ASK and my 22nd year teaching middle school in Rio Rancho. I am licensed in all core content areas and gifted education. I am excited to return to my educational roots in Humanities this year after 8 years of math and science.

 

 This first quarter we are jumping into reading, writing, and grammar usage  in our quest for fantastic literary fluency. Then we will deep dive into our first Project Based Learning unit 'Roots to Rise' as we discover our own Roots through reading, researching, interviewing,  and communicating our findings as well as developing a plan for our own Rise for our life ambitions as we get to know ourselves and develop our passions in life.

A brief summary: ELA includes reading and writing in a variety of genres and types or purposes of composition, usage, grammar, and punctuation, research, Project Based Learning activities, and some cross-curricular activities.    

CLASS EXPECTATIONS:  Respect your project managers, the learning community, the learning space, and yourself. In reaching this expectations:

• Come to class prepared, on time, and ready to learn.
• Be ACTIVE and FOCUSED in your participation and learning.
• Be respectful of all ideas and attempts provided in class. 
• All written projects shall be completed in class.
• OWN your learning: take responsibility for your attitude, skills, and knowledge.
• Be willing to learn from your mistakes.
• Use technology and equipment wisely and appropriately. Remember you/your parents entered into a written technology agreement with The ASK Academy. 
• Use manners and clean up after yourself.
• Avoid Plagiarism, Cheating, Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), ghost writers, and any and all other academic dishonesty: See consequences for choosing this behavior.
• Absolutely ALL scholar cell phones will be turned off in the learning space. 
• For focus/noise reduction, CORDED earbuds or headphones only and they must NOT be plugged in to any other electronic device. 
• Reach out for help; I promise I do not bite.
• Other expectations may be added as situations arise throughout the year.

 

Scholars can expect from ASK Managers: 

• Create an intellectually challenging and fun learning environment.
• Be prepared to teach every day.
• Be fair, consistent, and considerant.
• Make mistakes and learn from them.
• Be available to help you on Fridays from 8-10 am by appointment only.

STANDARDS:  This course is aligned with the New Mexico Public Education Standards. At the bottom of the syllabus, you will find the  Curriculum Map that more specifically identifies those standards appropriate for this course. 

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION: 

Quarter Grades:   Are based on the composite of all work submitted. Logically, learning activities that require more scholar work and effort will have great weight whether in points or percent of grade.  Missing work will have zeros used as place holders until work is submitted (See late work policy for 7th grade.) Projects and scholar learning are much better quality when worked on over time rather than doing the entire project the night before it is due.  I realize that there will be RARE occasions when a little more time--a day or two--is needed, so I will work with you when you, the scholar, take the initiative to arrange this with me personally on a rare and case-by-case basis when you have arranged with me at least three days prior to when it is due AND Friday Support time will then be expected. Due dates and times in Google Classroom and/or posted in the learning space will be used to determine timeliness of submission.

 

Plagiarism, Cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty: First offense is a dialogue with the scholar as well as documented contact home. A Zero entered, with a chance to redo for credit earned on the Friday following identification.  Second and subsequent offenses will result in a permanent zero and implementation of the ASK discipline matrix. Academic dishonesty includes ghost writing, receiving ghost writing, plagiarism, cheating, use of AI, family/friend work submitted as scholar work, etc.  See the discipline matrix when it is uploaded to the ASK website.

Semester Grades - Scholar’s semester grades will be calculated as follows:

Quarter 1 – 40%      Quarter 2 – 40%      Semester Final – 20%

Quarter 3 - 40% Quarter 4- 40% Semester Final - 20%

 

 GRADING SCALE:   The grading scale will follow the ASK Academy standards:

A+ = 96-100 % 

A = 90-95 %

B = 80-89 %

C = 70-79 %

N/C(No credit) = Below 70 %

HOMEWORK POLICY:  Daily reading of 30 minutes will be expected of each and every scholar. Additionally, there will likely be 30 to 45 minutes of work outside of class once or twice a week. No essay or written composition will be accepted if it has been worked on outside of our supervised ELA learning space so that I, as project manager, am able to guide scholars and determine each person’s individual strengths as well as areas for growth. 

LATE WORK POLICY: The 7th grade team policy is as follows:   Late work is only accepted within the same week at  either a 15 point or 15 percent deduction from original possible points.  Schedule appointments to Utilize Friday Support hours for making up missing work.  Extension beyond the Friday deadline for missing work will be at Project Manager’s discretion and an exception basis to extend for extenuating circumstances only.

ABSENCES: Per the scholar handbook, work for excused absences is equal to one additional day for each day of excused absence. For unexcused absences including trips and vacations, the scholar must make arrangements with the project manager for any late work consideration.  If you know ahead of time about unexcused absences, please make those arrangements prior to the absences.

PROJECT EXPECTATIONS: All projects will have work requirements and rubrics provided and/or developed with scholars at the beginning of the learning experience so scholars will know precisely what the grading standards are. Additionally, the vast majority of our projects will require working with other scholars because in real life work situations, we almost always work in teams of some kind.

*UNIFORM AND ATTENDAANCE POLICY*

ASK Academy scholars are expected to arrive on time (8:00AM) and be adequately prepared for their day. Please contact The ASK Academy on the website at: https://www.theaskacademy.org and click the Attendance link on the home page or call 505-891-0757 to notify us of your scholar’s absence. 

Uniform Policy

The Academy requires that all scholars wear a prescribed uniform. 

Tops (Shirts) – All scholars must wear an ASK polo shirt, with the ASK logo, purchased from an approved ASK vendor. The color of the ASK polo shirt identifies the scholar with their selected career pathway.  Polo shirts will not be overly baggy, nor exceedingly tight. Shoulder seams must be at the shoulders, and shirts cannot hang down below mid-thigh level.  Middle School – Red or Light Blue  High School –  Biomedical Sciences – Dark Green or Purple  Engineering and Design – Royal Blue or Burgundy  Bottoms (Pants) –  Allowable pants/slacks of solid color (khaki or black) and should meet our uniform expectations. They should be of a non-stretch, khaki or similar material.  No shorts, skorts, skirts, cargo pants (pants with many pockets) are allowed.  No excessive “sagging” is allowed. Inseam of pants must be where legs and torso join.  Excessively tight pants such as spandex, yoga pants, leggings, sweat pants or other non-uniform fabrics are not allowed. 

Footwear

 Scholars must wear closed-toe shoes at all times at the Academy (no sandals, flip-flops, crocs, open-back shoes, slippers, or shoes made out of foam are allowed). Please remember that our learning spaces have sharps, blades, power tools, solvents, and acids so adherence to this policy is a priority. No headwear Hats, bandanas, beanies, headbands with extraneous distractors, etc. including sweatshirt hoods, are not allowed inside the Academy. Exemptions for headwear that may be required for religious reasons will be considered on a case-by-case basis. 

Outerwear 

Jackets will not qualify as a replacement to an ASK polo. Jackets may be worn as long as they have a zipper front and are not excessively baggy (shoulder seams are at the shoulders and cannot hang below mid-thigh level). When worn inside, jackets must allow full view of the ASK polo (be worn unzipped indoors). Scholars can wear sweatshirts and hoodies under, but not over the ASK polo. Please remember that the ASK polo is one of our layers of security. Clothing or jewelry that are determined to pose a risk to potential injury while in the learning environment will not be permitted. Attire or accessories which advertise, display or promote any drug, alcohol, tobacco, gang, sexual activity, violence, disrespect or bigotry towards any group, or items that are associated with a gang are not permitted. All attire should be suitable for a professional environment.

CRITERIOS DE EVALUACIÓN:

Cuartos de grado: Se basan en el compuesto de todos los trabajos presentados. Lógicamente, las actividades de aprendizaje que requieren más trabajo y esfuerzo escolar tendrán un gran peso ya sea en puntos o porcentaje de calificación. El trabajo faltante tendrá ceros utilizados como marcadores de posición hasta que se envíe el trabajo (consulte la política de trabajo tardío para el 7º grado). Los proyectos y el aprendizaje escolar son de mucha mejor calidad cuando se trabaja a lo largo del tiempo en lugar de hacer todo el proyecto la noche antes de su vencimiento. Me doy cuenta de que habrá ocasiones raras en las que se necesitará un poco más de tiempo, un día o dos, así que trabajaré con usted cuando usted, el erudito, tomela iniciativa de arreglar esto conmigo personalmente de forma rara y caso por caso cuando haya acordado conmigo al menos tres días antes de la fecha de vencimiento Y se esperará el tiempo de apoyo del viernes. Las fechas y horas de vencimiento en Google Classroom y/o publicadas en el espacio de aprendizaje se utilizarán para determinar la puntualidad del envío.

 

Plagio, trampas y otras formas de deshonestidad académica: La primera ofensa es un diálogo con el académico, así como el contacto documentado en casa. Entró un cero, con la oportunidad de rehacer el crédito obtenido el viernes siguiente a la identificación. La segunda y posteriores ofensas resultarán en un cero permanente y la implementación de la matriz de disciplina ASK. La deshonestidad académica incluye escritura fantasma, recepción de escritura fantasma, plagio, trampa, uso de IA, trabajo familiar / amigo presentado como trabajo académico, etc. Consulte la matriz de disciplina cuando se cargue en el sitio web de ASK.

POLÍTICA DE TAREAS: Se espera una lectura diaria de 30 minutos de todos y cada uno de los estudiantes. Además, es probable que haya de 30 a 45 minutos de trabajo fuera de clase una o dos veces por semana. No se aceptará ningún ensayo o composición escrita si se ha trabajado fuera de nuestro espacio de aprendizaje supervisado de ELA para que yo, como gerente de proyecto, pueda guiar a los académicos y determinar las fortalezas individuales de cada persona, así como las áreas de crecimiento.

POLÍTICA DE TRABAJO TARDÍO: La política del equipo de 7º grado es la siguiente: El trabajo tardío solo se acepta dentro de la misma semana con una deducción de 15 puntos o 15 por ciento de los puntos posibles originales. Programe citas para utilizar las horas de soporte de los viernes para recuperar el trabajo faltante. La extensión más allá de la fecha límite del viernes para el trabajo faltante será a discreción del Gerente del Proyecto y una base de excepción para extender solo por circunstancias atenuantes.

ABSENCIAS: Según el manual del estudiante, el trabajo para ausencias justificadas es igual a un día adicional por cada día de ausencia justificada. Para ausencias injustificadas, incluidos viajes y vacaciones, el becario debe hacer arreglos con el gerente del proyecto para cualquier consideración de trabajo tardío. Si sabe de antemano acerca de las ausencias injustificadas, haga esos arreglos antes de las ausencias.

EXPECTATIVAS DEL PROYECTO: Todos los proyectos tendrán requisitos de trabajo y rúbricas proporcionadas y / o desarrolladas con los estudiantes al comienzo de la experiencia de aprendizaje para que los estudiantes sepan con precisión cuáles son los estándares de calificación. Además, la gran mayoría de nuestros proyectos requerirán trabajar con otros académicos porque en situaciones de trabajo de la vida real, casi siempre trabajamos en equipos de algún tipo.
