PREREQUISITE(S): Prior approval with General Project Manager and Mr. Morales for using sport as your physical activity.
TEXTBOOKS: none
SUPPLIES: Dress out clothes- Shorts (must be mid-thigh length or longer), navy or black sweats in colder months (no logos or pictures), tennis shoes (no open toed shoes), socks, deodorant, notebook, folder for handouts
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
THIS COURSE WILL provide the understanding of a fitness regimen in life and the benefits of regular exercise to an individual’s health and mental wellbeing. Incorporate and demonstrate sportsmanship by participating in all activities within range of their ability.
SCHOLARS WILL choose a fitness or health regiment for the semester. They will design a research project around a personal goal in the area of improving their overall health in their life. They can refer to the NM standards to help them formulate their question if necessary. They will collect data to answer their personal question during the time frame they are in this program. They will measure the impact of their choice over time by keeping a weekly journal of at least five entries that is to be submitted by Thursday each week. They will complete the Program’s packet of adventures and reports.
STANDARDS: The ASK Academy standards are based on the New Mexico State Physical Education and Health Performance Standards.
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION: Scholars will be expected to dress out, participate, and show effort on a daily basis. Scholars will also have the opportunity to complete various projects and classroom activities that relate to the Health and PE curriculum. The following are examples of possible projects scholars will be evaluated on:
1. Developing a personal fitness research project by setting a personal health goal. Collecting data to analyze the positive change that has impacted their overall wellbeing. Presenting their findings to the class that includes a graph of their progress.
2. Complete a health diary and reflection log.
3. Develop a teen health information product such as a website, magazine, or series of videos related to variety of health topics such as: sexuality, nutrition; alcohol, tobacco and other drug use; mental, social and emotional well-being; etc.
4. Participating in fitness challenge which includes collecting data through fitness tests including: curl ups or partial curl-ups; shuttle run; endurance walk/run; V-sit reach; pull ups or right angle push-ups.

4.5 pts.= 96-100% 4pts. 90-95% 3pts=80-89% 2pts=70-79% N/C =Below 69%

MEDICAL EXCUSES / CLASS ABSENCES:
Every scholar must make-up any missed PE class unless the absence was due to a school affiliated event. It is the responsibility of the student to confirm this event with his/her PE teacher. A scholar who is absent from school or excused medically, must make-up the work missed with a one-page health article review (newspaper, internet, magazine) and check with their PE project manager if they missed a test or fitness run. If a scholar is ill, he or she must bring a note signed by their parent/guardian to excuse them for a maximum of 3 days. Excuses more than three days must come from a physician. If at school with a parent note, the scholar will complete an article review write-up in the library. If the student has been absent from school, the summaries for each day missed are due within one week of their return. By completing this work a scholar may earn part or all of their participation points. If a scholar has an extensive absence from the PE class, the teacher and student will arrange a makeup research assignment. No PLAGIARISM!
Dressing Out, Participation, and Attitude:
Scholars will be expected to dress out every day for PE/Health. If students do not dress out, they will have an opportunity to make up their points via various assignments given by the project manager. However, if a scholar does not dress out and/or participate three times or more, scholars will not have the opportunity to make up the points missed and the scholar will lose the points for that day.
