Yearbook

Welcome to the class where you get to showcase people's memories.

Course Description:

Media plays a central role in our lives, and shapes the way we see ourselves, our country, and the world. Understanding the influence of mass communication, and more specifically, journalism, is crucial if we want to be responsible citizens. This course delves into the history of journalism, tracks the changes of media throughout time, and allows students to become citizen journalists through the ASK Academy’s online news outlet The Catalyst, as well as the school’s yearbook. Scholars will learn how to conduct interviews, write engaging features, take print-worthy photos, write captions, and construct thoughtful and intelligent opinion pieces. They will learn to become savvy consumers of media, as well as explore basic elements of design and see various publications from start to finish.

We begin working on the yearbook full-steam at the beginning of the spring semester, with a publication date in March. There will be various roles (photographer, graphic designer, editor in chief...etc.) and different sections of the book, and each scholar will be assigned sections and be responsible for taking the photos, writing headlines and captions, and designing those pages.
