Hello! Welcome scholars and their families to a new school year!

My name is Gina Paulson and I am super excited to begin my third year at The ASK Academy teaching 6th grade Earth Science. Although newer to ASK, this school year marks nearly 19 years as a teacher and 3 years as an assistant, in all 22 years in education. My experience includes work at the Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind, The Atlanta Area School for the Deaf, Groner K-8 School, and most recently Cielo Azul Elementary with Rio Rancho Public Schools.

It was my time at Groner K-8, in Hillsboro, Oregon, that I strengthen and developed my love of teaching science. This amazing, tiny school became one of the first schools in their district to develop a STEAM program and I had the honor of being a part of the beginning stages working directly with the students and the community creating an agricultural based STEAM program that serves K-8th grade. This incredible school left an indelible mark on my heart and The ASK Academy reminds me a great deal of my dear old school. I look forward to developing new relationships here and I am excited
.
 to be here!

Science is a passion of mine and I am so lucky to witness your joy in observing, exploring, and learning all about the world around us.

Testing Schedule April 4-7, 2022

It's that time of year folks, State Testing. Check the schedule, all scholars begin their day in FC then follow your regular schedule the reminder of the day in 45 minute periods.
Please come to school prepared to take this assessment. Get plenty of sleep, eat a good breakfast, and bring your glasses (if you wear them). Have either a book or something you can work on that is not on the computer should you finish early.

Rock the test and do your best! You got this! 👍👍

Science the week of March 28-31, 2022

ðŸŒą Welcome back from a hopefully relaxing and wild weather of a Spring Break! I am excited to see signs of spring all around and a few pops of green coming through. Back to the grind this week with exploring chemical energy and energy conservation and of course the BIGGIE this week, our Energy presentations begin on Wednesday.
  • Chemical energy is fascinating! How it is generated and captured is amazing! Let's go deep with a Q&A activity.
  • The Law of Conservation of Energy Part 2...there is more to explore!
  • Energy Presentations begin on Wednesday, be ready my friends! 👍
  • Binder check on Thursday this week, check GC for the list (on Monday).
  • Plus, a fun assignment; Energy License Plates
*If you are learning at home, please check your daily post in Google Classroom and communicate the work you are completing or need assistance in. Work with me during your time away so you are not overwhelmed when you return.😉

🌷 SPRING BREAK 🌞 Week of March 21-25, 2023

  • Thermal Energy exploration: How does the hot get hot? What is this energy source all about and where, when, and how we use this source. Why does a rise in temperature causes atoms and molecules to move faster and collide with each other? Conduction, Convection, and Radiation
  • Let's talk about oil ðŸ›Ē and natural gas this week. Where does it come from? Why do we need it? Why is our country do dependent on it for energy? â›― Pros and cons, let's take a deeper look. ðŸĪ
  • Lights, Camera, Action! ðŸŽĨ Brush up your acting chops, its Energy Conservation time for the inauguration of the FIRST EVER Energy Broadcast News. Delivering you accurate, up to date, and sometimes zany energy news produced, written, and directed by 6th graders at The ASK Academy. 📚
**The usual message to those learning from home...check Google Classroom. I post our work there everyday. Email me if you have questions or need to set up a meet if needed. Stay ahead if you are up to it.

Science the week of March 7-10, 2022

This week we continue to forge ahead with our energy unit exploring solar, Newton's 3rd law of motion, and all about coal. How is your research going for your campaign project? 😉 Don't forget to sign up for SLATE conference too! It's next week, coming up quick.
  • Newton's 3rd Law of Motion. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. So what does this exactly mean? DAY 3 of exploring Newton's Laws
  • Coal, nonrenewable fossil fuel that is combusted and used to generate electricity. How much do we use? Pros and cons of utilizing this source as fuel.
  • Solar energy baby! Another one of my favs! 🌅ðŸ•ķ  Powering toys, cars, homes, and large infrastructure all around the world since 1954. In 1954, Bell Labs developed the first silicon photovoltaic (PV) cell. Although solar energy had previously been captured and converted into usable energy through various methods, only after 1954 did solar energy begin to become a viable source of electricity to power devices over extended periods of time. This source is incredible! How do we obtain this energy? Is it safe? What is the cost and long term benefits of solar?
  • Our Energy campaign project launched last Thursday, have you selected your source to report on? Class time this Thursday and a review on Sound Energy.  *Details in Google Classroom.
Reminder, if you are at home learning, be sure to check Google Classroom daily for access to the lessons and the work. Check Powerschool too! Contact me if you have questions or need to schedule a time. I will be at school on Friday 3/11 for scholar support, 8-10 AM.

Science the week of February 28- March 3, 2022

  • Due to our snow day on 2/24, we are bumping sound energy to Monday! Yes!! SOUND! 🎧 🔊Bring your headphones for this immersive experience. This is one of my favorites!
  • Newton's 2nd Law of Motion is explored with some mini activities and explore a bit more into the lives of Women in Physics in recognition of Women's History Month. ðŸŽĒ 🧑‍🔎
  • Wind Energy on Wednesday. What exactly is wind? Where does it form and how do we collect energy from this source? LAB DAY: Build (team) an anemometer and monitor wind patterns.🍃 William Kamkwamba built the wind turbine in The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, to save his village, so let's connect the science on how this works.🌎
  • Renewable and Nonrenewable Sources review plus we get a look at our final project details. *Energy types Quiz retake on Thursday, be ready. This is your assignment focus for the week and will be entered in Powerschool.
**If you are at home learning, be sure to check Google Classroom daily for handouts and access to our lessons. The lab is one you can do at home, feel free to modify materials. Check in with me to ensure you are understanding the concepts.
