King Busse

Project Manager Cheryl Kirby’s seventh grade intro to engineering and design scholars, designed and built chairs out of cardboard. The scholar's chairs had to be innovative, have storage features, made of only duct tape and cardboard, and support Mr. Busse. These scholars did a great job! It’s good to be king!

Water Project Update

Thank you for donating to the water project! We were fully funded within an hour of the last newsletter. We received our kits for water treatment, and recently tried out a sample. We had a water sample from Soda Dam in Jemez Springs, which originates in the Valles Caldera. Lili Gonzales ran the sample and found 0 parts per million of chromium, copper, chlorine, ammonium, and phosphates. The pH was 7 (neutral). The nitrates read between 0 and 5, which could be an indicator of pollution but not at these low levels. Iron had a rating of 1, which is not harmful but can stain your fixtures. The dissolved oxygen reading was 4 ppm which is pretty low, and the chlorides read at 60. Given that the water was filtering through limestone, this is a low chloride reading (a max would be 250). So the water was quite good, which was surprising given the warm source.

Using the kit took about an hour, and we had a few more tests to run. We learned that we need about 3/4 of a water bottle’s worth of water (about 12 ounces) to run all the tests. We also have a few lead tests saved for special samples (these were much more expensive). We will now start a data base and a reporting form to supply to the person supplying the sample.

We need help again. This time with water samples taken from wells or any water source really. The procedure for collecting is to let the water run a bit, then sample about 12 ounces in any airtight container, like a water bottle or clean jar. Send it in with a scholar or through the office for McCann in 203 with an address of source, date of collection, and a name to return data to. I’d like to get all the scholars willing to run the tests involved. Again, thank you so much for your support.

Parent Support Committee

The ASK Academy Parent Support Committee (PSC) is back in action! We are parents who support the scholars, project managers, and programs at the school. All funds raised to go support/fund ASK activities. If you have questions about PSC, please contact Edward Garcia or Angela Croshaw. You can contact Nina Toepper with fundraising questions. We meet on the first Friday of every month at 8:00 a.m. at ASK Academy. Can’t make the meeting? No problem! Send your name to Angela Croshaw and she will put you on the email list to receive all PSC communication!
