AP Language & Composition

Welcome to AP Language! It's a wild and rewarding ride.

Course Description:

AP Language and Composition is an introductory, college-level language arts course. Through close reading and careful analysis of a broad range of challenging texts, scholars will increase their awareness of rhetoric and how language functions. The goal throughout the course is for scholars to determine through both reading and writing the needs of an audience in a specific context, and how language is tailoring and manipulating to fit those needs. Additionally, when reading complex texts, scholars should be able to infer the implied meaning, as well as identify an author’s purpose through rhetorical choices used and their effect on the reader.

Many assignments will be graded on the 6-point AP Scale. The grade breakdown is as follows:

6 = 100%
5 = 92%
4 = 84%
3 = 76%
2 = 68 %
1 = 60%
Missing = 0 %

*Please note that the quickest way to get behind in this class is to MISS assignments. This is a growth-mindset class. I expect you to struggle and improve over time, and the grading scale represents that goal.

Extra Credit:

Throughout the year, there will be opportunities to supplement your grade with AP Multiple Choice practice for extra credit.

Late Work Policy:

Unless otherwise specified, NO late work will be accepted in this course. Naturally, emergencies will be taken into consideration. Note that the lowest grade for each grade category will be dropped at the end of each quarter. This should help ease concerns about stray grades.
