The ABC Public Relations firm has hired your team to develop a brochure or poster that highlights one of New Mexico's tribes to teach silly Americans back East about how culturally rich and wonderful New Mexico is! Native New Mexicans are tired of being misrepresented in films and literature. So.... YOUR job is to create a brochure or poster that highlights the culture of one of New Mexico's Native groups and set the record straight!
In a group of two, your job is create an appealing AND informative brochure or poster of one tribe. The goal is to show off the history, culture, language, location of one group chosen or designated by your manager. Here are the groups to consider and research:
From the Pueblo group: Santa Ana, Sandia, Santo Domingo, Acoma, Zuni, Zia, Jemez, Taos, San Juan, San Ildefonso, etc.... (there are 19 to choose from in New Mexico!)
From the Apache group: Jicarilla, Mescalero, and Chiricahua
And then, last but not least: the Navajo (Dine)
The Process:
You and your partner will research the group assigned. Research your group with internet resources, your textbook, an encyclopedia, journals or other books available. The Rio Rancho Public Library has GREAT resources on New Mexico available, including magazines dedicated to this. You must CITE all resources you use, and take notes on a page with your citation. You may divide up these areas to cover with your partner:
1. Brief History of the people
2. Location of their home base or land
3. Languages spoken
4. Religious beliefs
5. Feast Days
6. Culture
7. Art
8. Famous people from that group
Your poster/brochure must be informative, correct, AND appealing to those Easterners who may be thinking about spending their tourism dollars in our state! You may draw, color, design, or use internet pictures to decorate your poster/brochure.
You will receive two project grades: one for your group cooperation and work, one individual based on your own contributions and work. Ms. Gray will pass out a Rubric for you to keep and turn in with your project, so you will know the guidelines! You will present your brochure to the scholars in your "company."
This project is due Monday, October 7th.
